The field of sport psychology examines psychological variables that impact athletic participation and performance. This course examines theories and research across diverse areas of psychology, including personality, cognitive, social, and clinical. Topics studied will include the personality differences between athletes and non-athletes, attributions for performance, strategies for successful performance, the predictors of anxiety, stereotypes, the team cohesion-performance link, effective approaches to coaching, coping with burnout and injury, self-confidence, and the prevalence of several disorders in athletes. Students can apply the knowledge gained to enhance their own mental resilience and improved performance as well towards diverse careers in coaching, personal training, sports science, mental performance consultation and other high-pressure performance environments.
