This is the first in a sequence of courses that helps the student develop functional skills at the keyboard. Skills include sight reading, harmonizing melodies, simple chord progressions, reading from multiple-part open scores, playing ensemble music, developing technique through the practice of scales and other finger patterns, and learning and performing simple piano pieces. Music majors who have the requisite remedial training in piano are required to take this course at the beginning of their keyboard training and thus have priority in registering for this course. Students who are not music majors but have the requisite background in piano can enroll on a space available basis.
